Gustavus looked sharp from the start jumping out to an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Gustie defense was stingy at the same time limiting the Cardinals to 10 points in the first 10 minutes of play. The Gusties led 23-10 at the mid-point of the frst half. Coach Mark Hanson's squad continued to score at a frantic pace and led by 16 points at the intermision (37-21). Phil Sowden had the hot hand in the first 20 minutes as he scored 11 points, making 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free thow line.
The Gusties stayed hot in the second half outscoring the Cardinals 28-9 through the first ten minutes and taking a 35-point lead (65-30) with 9:37 left in the game. Gustavus made 11-of-15 shots during that stretch, while the Cardinals made 5-of-9 shots from the field. The Gusties led by no fewer than 33 points the rest of the game. Coach Mark Hanson's squad shot 69.6 percent from the field (16-23), 75 percent from three-point range (6-8), and 75 percent from the free throw line (7-11) in the second half. Sophomore post Andrew Doble led the team in scoring in the second half with 11 points including 2-of-2 from the field and 7-fo-8 from the free throw line.
Gustavus finished the game with four players in double figures including Phil Sowden with 15, Andrew Doble and Robbie Schmidt with 13 each and Trevor Wittwer with 12. Saint Mary's was led by Terrence Smith and Mike Sweeney with 13 points each.
The Gusties shot 61.7 percent from the field (29-47), while the Cardinals connected on just 32.7 percent of their shots (17-52). Gustavus also held a convincing 38-19 edge in rebounds.
