Salisbury 83, Goucher 80

TOWSON, Md. — The Salisbury men’s basketball team (12-9, 6-4 CAC), looking for their first victory since defeating Catholic two games ago, squeaked out a win, 83-80, over Goucher College (1-18, 1-9 CAC) in double overtime. Junior forward Segun Odumeru (Riverdale, MD/Parkdale) surpassed 1,000 career points in the game, scoring 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting. He now sits 25th on Salisbury’s all-time scoring list with 1,005 points. Odumeru also added nine rebounds in the victory.

In the first half, the score remained close as the teams traded the lead six times. Neither team held more than a five-point lead. Goucher would take a lead into the halftime break, 30-28. Odumeru scored seven of his 22 in the first half, while Goucher’s Tim Merritt (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) led the Gophers with 11 points.

In the second half, Goucher would dominate late, pulling away with a seven-point, 52-45 lead with 6:07 left in regulation. Salisbury’s Ray Williams (Hanover, MD/Ft. Meade) and Rico Stewart (Arlington, VA/Washington & Lee) led the Sea Gulls to tie the game at 61 to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Goucher tied the score four times and force a second overtime with the score tied at 72. Odumeru dominated the second overtime, scoring nine points, including a free throw shot with 15 seconds remaining to clinch the three-point victory for Salisbury.

Other top scorers for Salisbury included Williams, who scored 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting; and Kyle Harmon (Salisbury, MD/Parkside), who scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Ozi Menakaya (Glen Burnie, MD/Capital Christian) led the Sea Gulls in rebounding with 10 boards. Darren Johnson (Montgomery Village, MD/Gaithersburg) added nine, while Williams added seven.

The Goucher attack was led by senior Jonathan Garritt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and junior James Russo (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney). Garritt scored 27 points on 7-of-25 shooting and eight rebounds. Russo also scored 27 points on 9-of-22 shooting, including 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point arc.

Salisbury shot 45.8% (33-of-72) from the field, bettering Goucher’s 37.9% (25-of-66) shooting. Salisbury also dominated inside, leading the rebounds, 52 to 33.
