Emory and Henry 78, Eastern Mennonite 77

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Freshman guard Camillo Weinz had a career-high 27 points to lead Emory & Henry College to a 78-77 win over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

EMU (11-10, 6-8 ODAC) held a 38-25 lead in the first half when E&H (11-10, 7-7 ODAC) closed the half on a 9-0 run to pull within four. The surge continued in the second half with the Wasps going on a 14-2 run to capture a 50-40 lead. Overall it was a 25-2 run for Emory & Henry.

However, with the Wasps holding a 52-42 lead with 14:44 to go, the Royals went on a run of their own, outscoring the Wasps 16-3 to take a 58-55 lead with 10:21 to go. The teams battled back-and-forth the rest of the way with four ties and five lead changes in the final 10 minutes.

EMU led 76-73 with 1:42 to go when E&H junior guard Korey Townsend (South Boston, Va.) hit a lay-up and was fouled by EMU junior forward Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.). Sager was then called for a technical foul and the Wasps made all three ensuing free throws for a five-point possession and a 78-76 lead.

Both teams went scoreless until with three seconds left, EMU junior center Jason Lentz (Diana, W.Va.) got the ball underneath and was fouled. He hit his first free throw attempt but missed the second for his only miss of the night in 10 attempts. The ball went out of bounds to EMU with 0.6 seconds left, but a last-second heave from the baseline by Sager was long for a 78-77 E&H victory.

Weinz (Radford, Va.) had a career high 27 points and hit 7-of-15 three-pointers. All 15 of his shots for the game were beyond the arch. Freshman guard Robert Hudson (Nashville, Tenn.) finished with 12 points for the Wasps. Senior center Will Schwartzstein (Norwalk, Conn.) had five blocks to set the Emory & Henry career record with 114 blocks. The previous record of 109 was set by Brian Witcher (’93).

Sophomore guard Korey Whiting (Stafford, Va.) led EMU with 21 points, six boards, four assists, and four blocks. Lentz finished with his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Sager narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 14 points, nine boards, and four steals.

E&H picked up its eight win in its last 10 games. EMU, meanwhile, had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the second time in its last four games. E&H finished with 17 three-pointers, compared to just one for EMU. The Royals were also done in by 31 turnovers, the second highest total of the season. The season high of 39 was also against E&H earlier in the season.

EMU will get back on the court quickly, taking on Guilford College on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
