ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (7-13, 3-6 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to No. 5 Augustana College (Ill., 20-1, 10-0 CCIW), 87-80, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Carver Physical Education Center in Rock Island, Ill. The game was close the entire first half, with neither team enjoying more than a five-point lead. Augustana (Ill.) led by one point at the break, 39-38. The Vikings opened the second half with a 10-0 run to open up an 11-point lead, 49-38, at 17:32. Still up by 10 points, 57-47, at 14:55, Augustana (Ill.) saw its lead dwindle to two points, 58-57, at 11:36. From that point, the Vikings used a 13-0 run to go up by 14, 71-57, at 9:01. Carthage fought back to make it a four-point game on three occasions, the last at 84-80 with 37 seconds remaining, but Augustana (Ill.) hung on for a seven-point win, 87-80. The Vikings shot 48 percent (28-58), including 52 percent in the second half (13-25). Carthage shot 50 percent (28-56), including 54 percent in the second period (14-26). Augustana’s Rick Harrigan scored a game-high 37 points on 11-of-18 field goals, including four-of-seven three-pointers, along with a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. Jay McAdams-Thornton added 16 points and nine rebounds. Kyle Jeffery topped the Red Men with 27 points and nine boards. Mark Morrison had 21 points, and Keena Johnson added 18 points and seven rebounds.
