Millsaps 59, Centre 56

DANVILLE, Ky. — Late run sinks men's basketball team

A late run to end the game was enough to end a four-game winning streak as the Centre College men's basketball team fell 59-56 to Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game, Friday, Feb. 3, in Danville, Ky.

The loss drops the Colonels record to 13-6 overall and 5-4 in the SCAC. Millsaps improves to 12-8 on the season and 5-4 in conference action.

Millsaps took control early, jumping out to a 15-7 lead with 12:43 left in the first half. A 7-0 run by Centre cut the lead to one point (15-14), but the Majors pushed the lead back to six points by scoring five unanswered points.

After junior centre John Patterson tied the game at 23 apiece and senior forward Coy Zerhusen gave the Colonels a 25-23 lead, Millsaps scored six straight points to take a 29-25 lead with just under three minutes remaining. A pair of Centre free throws and a Millsaps lay-up to end the half made the scored 31-27 at the break.

The Colonels opened the second half on a 13-2 run to take a 40-33 lead with 15:45 to play. Centre would maintain that lead until the two-minute mark, when a Millsaps layup gave the Majors a 56-54 lead.

The Colonels had a chance to tie the game and go ahead but missed a pair of free throws. After two Millsaps's made free throws, Centre trailed 59-56 with 0:14 left. Two three point attempts rimmed out and the Colonels winning streak ended with a three-point loss.

Tyler Warren paced the Majors with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Edrick Montgomery and Rodney Rogan added 12 points each. Rogan also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the win.

Senior center Reggie Magnusson led all scorers with a game-high 22 points. Zerhusen posted his fifth double-double of the year with 10 points and game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

Centre will next play, Sunday, Feb. 5, when they host Oglethorpe University. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
