Webster 74, Maryville (Mo.) 73

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Last night the Maryville University men’s basketball team fell to Webster University in a heartbreaking loss that came down to the final seconds of the game. As the buzzer sounded, the Gorloks won 73-74 to drop the Saints to 6-2 in the SLIAC and 11-7 overall. With the second half of conference play underway, Maryville and Webster are tied for second place in the conference, just behind Blackburn.

The two teams were neck and neck throughout the whole game with 10 lead changes in all. Finally, in the last 20 seconds of the game, Maryville’s Ben Hebl hit a huge basket to bring the Saints within one of the Gorloks. After a few nail-biting seconds, Maryville fouled with only three seconds to go, but Webster’s Scott Spinner missed the front end of his free throws giving the Saints one last opportunity to take the game. With a hail-mary throw across the court, the Saints were unable to get a shot off and the game was over.

Maryville’s starting five played most of the game with guards Hebl and Matt Regan leading the team’s effort with 17 points a piece. Hebl shot .545 from the field including 3-of-6 from the three-point arc. Regan’s points put him within 45 of reaching 1,000 career points.

Also in double-digits was senior post player Stephen Bash. Bash totaled 14 points in the game shooting .750 from the field and pulling down four rebounds while tallying a team-high three steals.

Fellow starters Ryan Klein and Tim Elwell also contributed to the team’s efforts. Klein finished with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Elwell handed out a team-high six assists and had two points and two steals.

Webster was led by Scott Spinner and Darin Hoggatt who had 18 points a piece. Spinner finished 4-of-8 from the three-point arc while dishing out a team-high five assists.

Next up for the Saints is Greenville College this Saturday, February 4. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm inside the Moloney Arena.
