CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Senior guard Travis Moore scored a game-high 23 points and went 13-for-14 from the free throw line to lead host Washington College to an 88-83 overtime win over visiting Ursinus College. The Shoremen improved to 10-10 overall and remain in a tie for third place in the Centennial Conference with Gettysburg with an 8-5 league mark. The defending Centennial Conference Champion Bears, who had won eight straight games overall and 10 consecutive conference victories, slipped to 15-5 overall and fell into a first-place tie with Johns Hopkins with an 11-2 league record. The Bears led by as many as 13 points in the first half before the Shoremen cut the margin to 30-24 at the break. Washington came out hot in the second half, outscoring Ursinus, 26-5, over the first 8:46 of the period to take a 50-35 lead on a pair of Moore free throws with 11:14 remaining.
Ursinus mounted a comeback of its own and were within seven points before Brian McEvily nailed a three-pointer with 35 seconds remaining in regulation to slice the lead to 70-66. Senior guard Drew Hill made 1-of-2 free throws with 31 seconds for Washington, but Will Furey drained a three-pointer with 19 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to 71-69. Senior guard Kyle Stem made a pair of free throws at the other end for the Shoremen with 18 seconds left in regulation before Matt Fabian converted a put-back with nine seconds on the clock to make it 73-71. Following a Washington turnover with four seconds remaining, McEvily hit a jumper as time expired to send the game into overtime knotted at 73-73.
Ursinus held a 79-78 lead with 2:05 left in the extra session when Washington called timeout. Stem made a pair of free throws to give the Shoremen the lead for good at 80-79 with 1:58 to go. After a Bear turnover, senior forward Jonathan Webb made a lay-up with 1:15 on the clock to push the lead to 82-79.
Nick Shattuck made a pair of free throws on the other end for Ursinus with 1:01 on the clock to trim the lead to 82-81, but Webb made a pair of free throws for Washington to extend the margin to 84-81 with 35 seconds to play. On the next Ursinus possession, A missed lay-up by Furey and a missed put-back by Fabian ended up with a Webb rebound. Webb was fouled with 15 seconds remaining and made both free throws to make it 86-81. Mike McGarvey drove down the court for Ursinus and made a lay-up with eight seconds remaining to cut the lead to 86-83. Moore was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made both free throws, his 12th and 13th consecutive made free throws of the game, to put the game away with seven seconds left.
The Shoremen outscored the Bears, 10-4, over the final two minutes of overtime and went 8-for-8 at the line during that stretch.
Moore scored his 23 points in just 23 minutes of playing time. Along with his 13-of-14 performance at the line, he was 4-of-6 from the field and canned both of his three-point attempts. Webb added 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds for Washington. Junior forward Joey Breslin added 14 points, while senior guard Kyle Stem and senior guard Dustin Abbate each tallied 10 points. Stem also dished out a team-best four assists.
Shattuck led the Bears with a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds. McEvily added 16 points and seven rebounds, while McGarvey finished with 14 points, a game-high seven assists, and a game-high four assists. Furey contributed 14 points, while Fabian tallied 10 points and a game-best 13 rebounds, including six offensive boards.
Ursinus held a 46-38 advantage on the boards, including a 17-12 edge on the offensive glass. The Shoremen turned the ball over six fewer times than the Bears (16-22). Both teams shot well from the line; Washington was 27-of-33 (82%) at the line, while Ursinus was 19-of-21 (91%).
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Gettysburg. The winner of Saturday's game will take sole possession of third place in the conference.
