WHITEWATER, WI — For the second consecutive road game, UW-Platteville erased almost all of a double-digit second-half deficit but fell just short in coming all the way back. UW-Whitewater held off the determined Pioneers 67-64 Wednesday.

The Warhawks, who received votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll, led by as many as 11 points in the second half at 43-32. Three consecutive three-point baskets, two by Clay Dean and one by Mark Gossens, cut the margin to 43-41. The Warhawks went back up by 10 at 57-47 before Mike Jamerson scored seven straight points, narrowing the deficit to 57-54.

The Pioneers clawed within one point twice, at 59-58 and again at 63-62, but the Warhawks made eight straight free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Jeremy Manchester's two free throws with 10 seconds remaining gave the Warhawks a 65-62 lead, and Rob Perry made two more with five ticks left. Jamerson scored in the last second to account for the final 67-64 score.

The Warhawks improved to 14-5 overall, 8-3 in the WIAC. The Pioneers, whose previous two losses came in overtime to UW-Stout and by five at UW-Eau Claire, slipped to 9-10, 4-7.

Jamerson and Jeff Skemp, who made 6-8 from the field, each scored 14 points for the Pioneers, while LeVon Crawford added 10.

The Warhawks' Perry led all scorers with 17 points, while Melvin Williams scored 12 and Manchester 10.

Both teams made all 13 of their free-throw attempts in the second half. UWW made 51 percent from the field, while the Pioneers were right there with 49 percent.

UW-Platteville plays host to UW-River Falls Saturday at 7 p.m. The annual alumni game will be played at 3:30 p.m.
