The Vikings made 59.4 per cent of their field goals in the first half while holding UMD to 26.2 per cent from the field in taking a 44-34 lead at the intermission. Walker scored 16 points in the first half, making seven of his nine shots.
SSU led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but a late rally allowed the Corsairs to tie the game at 73-all on consecutive three-pointers by junior guard Devon Maiorano and junior forward Paul Pawlowski with 3:21 remaining. But the Vikings regained the lead on a basket by Walker, and Downie made four of five free throws in the final minute to enable SSU to hold off the Corsairs’ late charge.
Maiorano led UMass Dartmouth with 19 points, Pawlowski added 14, and junior forward Stephane Abelard and senior center Charlie Large added 13 points apiece. Large also grabbed 13 rebounds as the Corsairs out rebounded Salem State, 47-42.
Walked led all scorers with 27 points, and Downie had 21. The Vikings finished the game making 48.3 per cent of their shots from the field while UMD shot 33.3 per cent.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 11-9 with the defeat, while Salem State won for the 12th time in their last 14 games and improved to 13-6. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
