The Regents’ men’s basketball team avenged their 76-74 loss of two weeks ago by soundly defeating the Concordia Cougars, 89-60. The game began much as the last one did, with energetic fans and a good Regent lead in the first half. The key difference in the second half was that the Regents just refused to stop. They continued their scoring onslaught from their 16-point halftime lead and raised that lead to as much as 32 in the second half.
The magic number for the Regents tonight was 5. No, not Allen Young (Romeoville, IL/Bolingbrook). While Allen (#5) had a good game with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal, the number five pertains to two of his teammates, Maurice Smith (Loves Park, IL/Harlem) and Jacob Dunkel (South Beloit, IL/South Beloit). Smith had his fifth 30+ point game this season with 32 points tonight, and Dunkel had his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds as well as 7 blocks, 2 assists, and 4 steals. The number five was also unlucky for Dunkel, though, as he collected five fouls for his seventh foul-out of the season. Seneca Evans (Chicago, IL/Chicago Vocational) had 9 assists and 8 points for the night, and Dupree Powell (Rockford, IL/Jefferson) rounded out the Regents starters with his statistical menagerie of 11 points, 3 rebounds, a pair of steals, a block and an assist. The Regents are now 3-3 in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference, raising them to the level of Concordia, who falls to 3-3. The Regents are 12-9 overall.
The Cougars were led in scoring by Layafette Bell (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West), who had 13 points, as well as Justin Gray (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) and David Mikrut (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), who each had 10.
