Johns Hopkins 52, Swarthmore 44

BALTIMORE, Md. — Juniors Matt Griffin and Danny Nawrocki combined for 33 points to lead Johns Hopkins to a 52-44 win over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference men's basketball at Goldfarb Gym on Wednesday night.

Griffin scored a team-high 19 points, making 6-of-11 attempts from the field for the Blue Jays (15-4, 11-2) and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Griffin picked up 10 of his 19 in the second half and hit on three straight free throws in the final minute to give Hopkins its biggest advantage of the night at 52-41.

Nawrocki added 14 to go along with nine rebounds. For Nawrocki, it was his 17th double-digit scoring effort of the season.

Sophomore Ian McCormick notched his fifth double-double of the season for the Garnet Tide (4-16, 3-10), taking game-high honors with 21 points and 10 rebounds. McCormick shot 10-of-14 from the field.

After Swarthmore jumped out to a 10-2 lead six minutes into the contest, Hopkins triggered a 15-0 run that included five Griffin points to take back the lead for good.

The Garnet Tide got as close as three in the second half, narrowing the gap to 33-30 with 13:06 remaining, before a 6-0 Blue Jay run put away the game.

For the second time in a week, Hopkins shot a season-low from the field, hitting on only 32.1 percent (18-of-56) of its attempts. Swarthmore didn't fare much better, connecting on only 34 percent (18-of-53) of its tries.

Freshman Scott Weisenfeld handed out a game-high six assists for the Blue Jays.

Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, hosting the Fords of Haverford College. The Blue Jays handled Haverford, 89-69, on Jan. 10 at GIAC Gooding Arena. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
