Susquehanna 72, Elizabethtown 68

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — In a game that remained close from start to finish, Susquehanna defeated Elizabethtown 72-68 at Etown’s Thompson Gymnasium Wednesday night. The host Blue Jays dropped to 13-6 overall and 5-4 in the Commonwealth Conference, while Susquehanna improved to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Susquehanna shot 47.2% (25-for-53) from the field, 31.3% (5-for-16) from three-point range and 70.8% (17-for-24) from the free throw line, while Etown shot 36.7% (22-for-60) from the floor, 27.8% (5-for-18) from behind the arc and 82.6% (19-for-23) from the free throw line. Susquehanna out-rebounded Elizabethtown 42-27, while the Blue Jays held a 9-2 advantage in steals and committed just five turnovers against 15 turnovers for Susquehanna.

Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Twin Valley) and Brad Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) each led Etown in scoring with 14 points and each pulled down four rebounds. Michael Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) added 12 points for Etown from off the bench.

Andy Gaebel (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led Susquehanna in scoring with 19 points as he shot 5-for-6 from downtown and 7-for-10 from the field. Matt Effler (Rye Brook, NY/Blind Brook) led all players in the game in rebounds with 12, and he scored 15 points for Susquehanna off 5-for6 shooting from the field and a 5-for-7 performance from the free throw line. Sean Ulichny (Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) added 15 points as well for Susquehanna as he shot 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, February 4 against conference rival Lebanon Valley College in a 3:00 p.m. game.
