Carthage 76, Wheaton (Ill.) 47

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (7-12, 3-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) upended Wheaton College (Ill., 6-12, 2-5 CCIW), 76-47, on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Wheaton (Ill.) made the opening basket, but it was all Carthage after that. The Redmen took a 10-point lead, 16-6, at 12:08. The Thunder whittled that down to two points, 16-14, at 10:04, and the Red Men led by six at the break, 33-27. Carthage opened the second half with an unbelievable 21-0 run to open up a 27-point lead, 54-27. The Thunder finally broke the drought with pair of free throws by Andy Wiele at 13:45. The lead got as large as 33 points on two occasions, the last at 72-39 at 4:47, as the Red Men cruised to a 29-point victory, 76-47. Carthage shot 56 percent (29-52), including 62 percent in the second half (18-29). Wheaton (Ill.) shot just 39 percent (19-49), including one-of-14 from three-point range. Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Malik Imani had a game-high 20 points on seven-of-nine field goals, including six-of-eight three-pointers. Keena Johnson had 19 points on eight-of-13 from the floor, Kyle Jeffery 14 points and five rebounds, and Mark Morrison chipped in 10 points. Michael Fiddler topped the Thunder with 13 points and six boards. Carthage travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, Feb. 4 to play No. 5 Augustana College (Ill., 19-1, 9-0 CCIW) at the Carver Physical Education Center (7:30 p.m.).
