Augustana 59, North Park 48

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Junior point guard Drew Wessels was all over the floor on Tuesday night and his energy helped fifth ranked Augustana overcome a game North Park squad in a 59-48 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victory. After three straight victories over ranked opponents in a span of eight days, the Vikings had trouble against a North Park team that came into the game with just four victories.

Helping to overcome a .417 (20-48) shooting performance was the play of Wessels. He scored 11 points on four of seven shooting and three of three from the free throw line and had four rebounds, three assists and a career high eight steals. He was the person most responsible for the fact that the Vikings scored 20 points off turnovers, nine the first half and 11 in the second.

North Park led 24-23 at halftime but Augustana went on 19-6 run in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza with a steal and subsequent layup by Wessels at 10:24 making it 42-30. The visitors cut the lead to seven (49-42) with 2:47 left on a basket by Jay Alexander. After Rick Harrigan missed a three point attempt with 2:14 left, North Park had a chance to make it interesting but Wessels stole the ball from Devin Burnett and scored with 2:03 left to put the lead back up to nine (53-44). Burnett turned the ball over again on North Park’s next possession and Dain Swetalla made a pair of free throws to jump the lead to 11 (55-44) with 1:35 to go.

Harrigan led Augustana in scoring with 12 points while Wessels had 11 and Swetalla 10, along with a game high eight rebounds. Swetalla and Wessels each had three assists. The Vikings overcame a cold shooting first half of .375 (9-24) to hit .458 (11-24) in the second half.

North Park got 16 points from Alexander and 11 each from Brett Mathisen and Bjorn Berg.

Augustana moved to 19-1 on the season and 9-0 in the CCIW while North Park fell to 4-16 and 2-7.
