Ursinus 82, Washington College 73

COLLEGEVILLE, Penn. — Mike McGarvey dished out a school-record 14 assists to lead host Ursinus College, the defending Centennial Conference Champion, past visiting Washington College, 82-73, in the conference opener for both schools this evening in Collegeville, PA. Senior guard Dustin Abbate scored a game-high 23 points in the losing effort for the Shoremen (1-4 overall).

Washington and Ursinus played a fast-paced first half, with the score tied at 44-44 at the end of the period. The Bears (3-1) used a 7-0 run early to start the second half to take a 51-44 lead on a three-pointer by McGarvey with 17:00 to play, but the Shoremen came back to cut the lead to 63-61 on an Abbate three-pointer with 7:50 to go. Ursinus went on a 10-4 spurt to extend the lead to 73-65 and take back control of the game. The Shoremen twice clipped the lead to four points in the final minute, but the Bears went 7-for-8 at the charity stripe in the final 39 seconds to seal the victory.

McGarvey tallied 13 points to go along with his 14 assists for Ursinus, while Nick Shattuck grabbed a career-high ten rebounds and scored 18 points. Matt Fabian and Brian McEvily each added 18 points of their own for the Bears.

Abbate shot four-for-eight from beyond the three-point arc en route to his 23 points. Washington senior forward Jonathan Webb contributed 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while senior guard Drew Hill dished out a career-high seven assists. Senior guard Kyle Stem added 11 points for the Shoremen.

The Shoremen shot 39% from the floor and 40% from three-point range, and committed 19 turnovers in the game. The Bears shot 54% from the floor and committed 25 turnovers. Washington was out-rebounded by a margin of 39-31. The Bears shot 23-of-30 from the free throw line in the game, including 12-for-13 in the last 10 minutes.
