Mary Washington 87, Catholic 73

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team saw sophomore guard Justin Baker score 28 points, missing just two shots all evening, in an 87-73 win over 19th-ranked Catholic University on Wednesday at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 2-1 overall, and 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play, while the Cardinals fall to 4-1 and 0-1.
Mary Washington jumped out an early lead was able to keep it in double figures for much of the first halfBaker accounted for twelve points and Jon Pierce eight in the first stanza, while the Eagles shot over 50% from the floor (15-29).
UMW extended the twelve-point halftime advantage to as many as 22 points on two occasions, and held on for the 14-point victory. Freshman forward Kiernan Whitworth scored 12 for UMW, with Pierce adding 14 before fouling out with nine minutes remaining. Scott Fumai scored 23 points to lead Catholic, who also got 15 points from Shane Sowden and Pat Dwyer.
