Gallaudet 63, Salisbury 60

WASHINGTON, DC — Senior guard Robert Haney Jr. took a feed from classmate Matthew Johnson and fired a three-point shot off the glass from the right wing as time expired to give the Gallaudet University men's basketball team a dramatic victory over Salisbury University, 63-60, in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday night. With the win, the Bison improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in CAC play, while the Sea Gulls fell to 3-3 and 0-1 in conference.

The Sea Gulls, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped, lost the contest despite outrebounding the Bison, 41-31. Salisbury, however, struggled offensively. SU hit only 8-of-22 field goals (36.4%) in the first half and 18-of-47 (38.3%) for the game. The Gulls also struggled from behind the three-point arc, hitting only 4-of-15 (26.7%) in the contest.

Ray Williams led the Salisbury attack with 14 points, hitting 4-of-9 field goals and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Segun Odumeru added 12 points and Rico Stewart dropped in nine points and pulled down six boards. Kyle Harmon led all rebounders with 10, while scoring six points, while Gary Ward finished with seven points.

Robert Haney, Jr. paced Gallaudet with 18 points, including 9-of-16 from the free throw line. Frank Jackson hit only 6-of-17 from the field, but scored 15 points. Both Jackson and Haney both pulled down nine rebounds.

After connecting on 9-of-26 (34.6%) from the field in the first half, the Bison rebounded to connect on 11-of-24 (45.8%) to finish the game with a 40% field goal percentage. GU was successful on 9-of-23 (39.1%) from behind the three-point arc.

Salisbury University will return to action Friday when the Gulls host the 13th Annual Sea Gull Classic. SU will take on John Jay College at 8 p.m. Friday. The other men’s game on Friday matches Shenandoah against City College of New York at 3p.m. The Consolation game is set for Saturday at 3 p.m., with the title game will tip off at 8 p.m.
