The shooting woes continued for the Bulldogs (1-4, 0-1 Freedom) as DSU converted just 23.9 percent (16-for-67) from the field and just 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from the charity stripe. The Rangers (4-0, 1-0 Freedom) made just 32.7 percent (18-for-55) of their attempts but it was enough to outlast DeSales.
A lay-up by freshman Erica Sovak gave DSU a 12-8 lead at the 11:50 mark of the first half, but the Bulldogs went without a basket for the next 11 minutes before fellow freshman Lisa Brennan got DSU back on the board with a trey from the corner to make it a 24-15 game. Two free throws by Courtney Cunningham ended the half with Drew leading 26-15.
DSU continued to trail by 11 points, 35-24, with 12:54 left in the second half before a 6-0 run cut the margin to five points, 35-30, with 11:10 left. The Bulldogs got within five two more times, but Drew answered with a 9-3 run to push the lead back to 11 with 3:52 to go. DeSales never got any closer than seven the rest of the way.
Junior Kirby Lutz was the lone Bulldog in double figures with 12 points. Sovak and fellow freshman Kim Rarick added eight points in the loss. Sophomore Jenna Stampf came off the bench to score six points and grab a career-high 15 rebounds.
Junior Melissa Kraft scored a game-high 14 points including four treys. Sophomore Pam Kakalec scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, junior Maggie Marquis totaled nine points and a team-high 11 boards and Cunningham finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
Drew out-rebounded DeSales 54-42 in the game. DSU did force the Rangers into 25 turnovers and had just 16 of its own.
