Clark 96, Worcester State 85

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team lost to the visiting Cougars of Clark University Tuesday night in Worcester State’s Lancer Gymnasium by the final score of, 96-85. The loss drops the Lancers to 2-2 on the season while Clark improves to 2-0.

Clark took a, 46-40, lead into the break both teams shot over 50% from the field. The game was tied six times before the Cougars were able to gain a six point advantage over the last 3:37 of the first half. Senior forward Cory Sklarz (Worcester, MA) paced the Cougars with 13 first half points. Senior guard Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) scored 22 points for the Lancers to keep Worcester State within striking distance.

The second half opened with the Lancers going on a 10-4 run to tie the game at, 50-50, less than three minutes into the half. The game was tied for the eighth and final time at, 60-60, before Clark was able to gain control of the game.

Sklarz finished with a game high 27 points for Clark as he led an offensive attack that produced five players finishing the game in double digits scoring. Dominique Beck (Brockton, MA) had 19 points and six rebounds to go along with Tim Dutille (Sunapee, NH), Pat Landers (Worcester, MA) and Asher Cowan (Petersborough, NH)’s 12, 11 and 14 points respectively.

Hopkins finished with 26 points for the Lancers while Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) and Ralph Frazier (Carver, MA) each finished with 16 points. Frazier also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Worcester State will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Nichols College. Clark will head to New York to play Connecticut College in the first round of the Skidmore College Tournament on Friday.
