Waynesburg 75, Pitt-Greensburg 66

WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Behind an 18-2 run over the last five-plus minutes of Tuesday's season opener against Pitt-Greensburg, the Yellow Jackets claimed a 75-66 victory over the Bobcats. Junior forward Jeff Nero led all players with a career-high 24 points, while senior swingman Ryan Bujnowski collected a game and career-high 13 rebounds. With the win, Waynesburg evens its record at 2-2, while UPG falls to 1-3.

Nero scored his 24 points (11 in the first half) on 8 of 14 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers. The junior also added five rebounds and three steals in the win.

Bujnowski posted 13 rebounds (3 offense, 10 defense) and finished one point shy of his first double-double of his career. In his first season as a starter, the Pittsburgh native leads the Yellow Jackets with 6.5 rebounds/game and 5.5 points/game.

Pitt-Greensburg boasted a 64-57 lead with 5:26 in the second half before Waynesburg limited the Bobcats to just two points the rest of the way. Keying the Yellow Jacket comeback was their success from the field and the free throw-line, as they shot 50 percent (12 of 24) from the field in the second half and over 70 percent (19 of 27) from the charity stripe.

Juniors Jeff Linden and Beau Wilson posted 11 and 15 points, respectively, in the win.

UPG, who was without its leading scorer, was led by Duke Cooper with 22 points and eight rebounds (3 offense, 5 defense).

Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 3, when it travels to face Franciscan-Steubenville at 1 p.m. for an exhibition match. The game will not count toward the final records or statistics due to the Barons as a club team.
