Trinity (Conn.) 91, Western Connecticut 83

HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior co-captain forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded team-highs of 28 points and 10 rebounds and added four assists to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 91-83 overtime win over the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials in men’s basketball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improves to 4-1 with its second straight win, while the Colonials drop to 4-2 with their first loss in five games.

Trinity scored the first four points of overtime and went on to outscore the Colonials, 12-4, in the extra frame, after Western Connecticut sophomore guard Jeff Courneen (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had tied the score at the buzzer with a short jumper. Rhoten, junior guard Patrick Martin (Springfield, Mass.), and freshman forward Aaron Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) each scored four points in the overtime for the Bantams. Trinity took a 45-40 lead into the locker room at the half and led by as many as 12 points in the second stanza, before Western Connecticut used a 20-8 run over the final six minutes to force the overtime.

Bantam sophomore center Russ Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came off the bench to make eight out of 10 shots from the floor and four out of five free throws for a career-high 19 points, along with six rebounds, and four blocked shots. Martin and junior guard Kino Clarke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added 13 points, while Clarke also had five boards and four assists, and Westbrooks finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and a team-high five dishes.

Senior guard Greg Cole (Tarrytown, N.Y.) led all scorers with 30 points, scoring five points in the last minute of regulation and nailing 11 out of 17 shots from the field and six out of nine from three-point range. Sophomore forward Jamie Procino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added 13 points, while Jason Barnett (Windsor, Conn.) recorded 10 points and team-highs of nine rebounds and four assists, and freshman guard Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, Conn.) contributed 12 points.
