Southern Maine 64, Bowdoin 55

GORHAM, Maine — Junior forward Ashley Marble (Topsfield, Maine/Woodland HS) scored 16 of her game-high 21 points to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 64-55 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in a game between two of the top four nationally-ranked teams in NCAA Division III women’s basketball, Tuesday in Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on the Gorham Campus.
With the win the Huskies remained undefeated with a 4-0 mark, while the Polar Bears suffer their first loss of the season to drop to 3-1. Southern Maine, which holds the all-time series lead over Bowdoin 26-10, defeated the Polar Bears for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
Senior forward Megan Myles (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little HS) scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and junior guard Katie Sibley (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region HS) chipped in with 10 points.
Junior guard Julia Loonin (New York, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) led three Polar Bears in double-figures, netting a team-high 15 points. Sophomore guard Marisa Berne (Falmouth, Maine/Catherine McAuley) added 14 points, including four three-pointers and junior forward Eileen Flaherty (Fairfield, Conn./Lauralton Hall) added 11 points.
Clinging to a slim three-point lead, the Huskies outscored the Polar Bears 10-4 over the final four minutes to earn the win. Ahead 54-51, Marble knocked down her lone three-pointer of the game from the top of the arc after a drive-and-dish assist from Myles to put USM up by six, 57-51, with 2:55 to go. Marble then knocked down one of two free throws to give the Huskies a seven point cushion before Bowdoin’s Berne drained one of her game-high four three-pointers to cut the margin to four, 58-54 with 1:44 on the clock.
The Huskies answered right back however on an acrobatic driving lay-up from senior guard Katie Frost (Calais, Maine/Calais) to move ahead 61-54 with under a minute to go. Frost ended the game with solid eight points and four assists.
Southern Maine cruised the rest of the way, knocking down four of six free throws in the waning seconds of the game, to take the 64-55 win.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road in its Little East Conference opener at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, December 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Bowdoin returns to the hardwood on the same date traveling to Rochester Polytechnic Institute for a 5 p.m. contest
