Bowdoin improves to 4-1 on the season with the win. With the loss, Southern Maine evens out to 2-2 overall.
Petrie scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Bowdoin. Junior forward John Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) added 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field while sophomore forward Andrew Sargeantson (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and sophomore guard Andrew Hippert (Spencer, Mass./St. John’s HS) chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Southern Maine sophomore guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) led all scorers with a career-high 24 points. Daniels finished the game 6-for-18 from the floor and 10-for-14 from the free thrown line. Sophomore guard Walter Phillips (Portland, Maine/Deering HS) added 17 points, including a 5-for-10 effort from three point range, while sophomore guard Andy Frost (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) chipped in with 10 point and four assists.
Trailing by 10 points 57-47 with 12 minutes to play in the second half, the Huskies fought their way back into the contest over the next six minutes to tie the game up at 67 points apiece. The Huskies outscored Bowdoin 17-10 during the offensive spurt, paced by six points a piece from Daniels and junior forward Ian Hebert (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester HS) and five points from Phillips.
The game remained close as the Polar Bears clung to a two point lead with 2:32 to play, before Bowdoin capitalized on a three-pointer from Petrie and three of four free throws following a personal and technical foul to put the game out of reach for the Huskies.
Bowdoin shot a solid 49.1 percent from the floor (27-of-55) and was equally as effective from long-range shooting 40.9 percent from three-point territory connecting on 9-of-22 threes. The Huskies shot 50 percent from the field (14-of-28) in the second half to make up for a less than average 25.7 percent mark (9-for-35) in the first half, ending the game with a 36.5 percent effort from the field (23-for-63)
Southern Maine returns to action in its Little East Conference opener, Saturday, December 3 at 3 p.m. at UMass Dartmouth. Bowdoin plays again Thursday, December 1. The Polar Bears will host Colby-Sawyer College at 7 p.m.
