Mass-Dartmouth 102, Bridgewater State 99

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team made 61.3 per cent of their shots from the field in the second half, built a 19-point lead with 6:34 remaining and held on to defeat Bridgewater State, 102-99, at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday night.

Trailing at halftime by a single point, the Corsairs started off quickly in the second half, using a 14-3 run after intermission to build a 63-52 advantage with 15:13 remaining.

The Bears cut the lead to eight points, 69-61, with 12:40 remaining, but UMD came back with a 22-11 run that gave them a 91-72 advantage with 6:34 left.

BSC fought back, reducing the Corsairs’ lead to 97-91 with 56 seconds remaining. Junior guard Chris Frazier hit two free throws with 43 seconds remaining to give UMass Dartmouth a 99-91 lead. But Cliff Furtado hit a jumper, then followed with a three-pointer to make it 99-96 with 24 seconds remaining.

Junior guard Devon Maiorano (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) drew a foul and hit one of two free throws, then Tom Cuddihy of BSC connected for a three-pointer to make it 100-99 with 13 seconds left. But junior Stephane Abelard (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) hit a pair of free throws with 4.2 seconds to play, and Furtado’s rushed trey missed as time expired.

“We did a much better job in the second half,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “We played much better man-to-man defense, contested their shots, and made some free throws. We didn’t do a good job against their press at the end of the game, but you’ve got to give Bridgewater credit. At the end of the game, we were playing with only one veteran in Devon along with three freshmen and a first-year player. We’ll get better, and it was good to win.”

Junior center Dan Holbrook led the Corsairs with 19 points in his first game at UMD. Senior center Charlie Large added 17, Abelard had 15, Maiorano and sophomore guard A.J. Tavares had 14 points each, and freshman guard Reece Freeman added 10.

Cuddihy of Bridgewater State led all scorers with 27 points. Furtado added 24 for the Bears, Derek Thompson had 21 and David Rukstalis added 13. Holbrook grabbed 12 rebounds as the Corsairs out rebounded BSC, 45-27.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-2 with the victory, while Bridgewater State fell to 3-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Tufts Thursday night.
