Kings Point 94, CCNY 29

11-29-05 — Kings Point, NY - The Kings Point Mariners opened their season at home with a 94-29 pummeling on the City College of New York Beavers Tuesday night.

The Mariners dominated the game, scoring 39 points off Beaver turnovers, with 23 of those points in the first half alone, helping the Blue and Gray to a 52-17 lead going into the break.

"I think we did a great job playing unselfishly tonight," said head coach Michael Murray.

Junior Andrea Carey put the Mariners on the board first with a jumper from Sophomore May Marie Hayes.

The Beavers were right there with the Mariners for the first five minutes of play, before the Mariners took off on a 22 - 2 run, led by Hayes who scored eight points from the field and going 1-for-2 at the line. Hayes' rebound for a layup, off Ashley Carlisle's missed shot put a close to the first half, with the Mariners up 35 points.

Carey and Hayes went into halftime already in the double digits in points, with freshman Kristen Hetsko and sophomore Morgan Gartner not far behind.

The second half looked the same as the first, with the Mariners shooting 52.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from the 3-point arc and 50 percent from the free throw line.

Hayes finished the game with her first season double-double scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Hetsko scored a season high in points (19), assists (6) and steals (7) going 7-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line. Carey also finished the game with a season high of 19 points.

Stephanie Cruz led the Beavers with 13 points, going 5-for-19 from the floor and sinking three of her attempted 3-pointers.

Next up, the Mariners travel to Brooklyn, NY to play Medgar Evers on Dec. 1.
