Hartwick 79, Skidmore 61

ONEONTA, N.Y. — Freshman guard Jan Cocozziello (New Hampton Prep/Westfield, N.J.) scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Hartwick College to a 79-61 win over Skidmore College in a non-conference men’s basketball game at the Binder Gym on Tuesday night.

Hartwick led 43-36 at the half before opening up the lead with stifling defense in the second half, as the Hawks held the Thorougbreds to just 27 percent shooting in the second half.

The Hawks led 46-39 with 17:59 left in the game, then used a 23-8 run over the next 11 minutes to build a 69-47 advantage with 6:29 left in the game. Cocozziello scored eight of his 17 in that span.

Hartwick, which improves to 3-1 on the season, had 12 different players score in the game, but had just one player in double figures. Freshman forward Ramond Doyley (Yonkers/Yonkers, NY) added eight points and nine rebounds, and freshmen guards A.J. Beaulieu (Portsmouth Abbey/Chicopee, Mass.) and Kevin Ryan (Lawrence Adademy/Scotch Plains, N.J) each scored nine.

Skidmore (1-2) finished with three players in double figures, led by 19 points from senior guard Greg Gallagher (North Haven/North Haven, Conn.). Jonah Haviland-Markowitz (Packer Collegiate Inst/Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 and Reed Juckett (Wellesley/ Wellesley, Mass.) added 10.

Hartwick will next host Vassar College on December 6.
