STORM LAKE, Iowa — The Buena Vista University men’s basketball team recorded its first win of the season with a decisive 80-65 victory over Central College on Tuesday evening at Siebens Fieldhouse. The Iowa Conference opener see-sawed back and forth for much of the game, but the Beavers’ impressive 21-3 run near the end of the second half slammed the door shut on Central’s hopes of winning the road contest. Central started the game strong, scoring seven points before Buena Vista finally put one through the hoop with four minutes gone in the first half. The Beavers struggled to even the score as the Dutch always appeared to be one step ahead. Midway through the first half, a Mark Joekel jumper sparked a 19-2 run for Buena Vista, which left Central in the wake and the Beavers going into halftime with a 35-26 lead.
The Beavers came out flat in the second half, and the Dutch took the opportunity to narrow the gap. Despite Jesse Schmidt’s dunk and Andre Wagner’s back-to-back three’s, Central tied the game up at 59-59 with seven minutes left in the game. The Beavers quickly proved their mettle by closing out the game with a stellar run.
Buena Vista’s 48 percent shooting from the floor (45 percent from beyond the arc) and a 44-33 rebounding edge paved the way for the win. Wagner was the only Beaver to score in double digits with 25, including 5 of 10 three-point shooting.
Taylor Phipps led Central with 18 points along with teammate Clint Driftmier’s double-double, 13 points and 14 rebounds. Zak Clark also reached double figures, tallying 13 points on the night as the Dutch fell to 1-3.
Buena Vista travels to Davenport to face St. Ambrose University on December 10th. The Beavers are 1-3 on the season.
