Clarksville, Ark. — The University of the Ozarks men's basketball team used Habeeb Kareem's career-high 30-point performance to hand Concordia-Austin an 92-89 loss in American Southwest Conference play on Monday night.
Using a run-n-gun style offense, Concordia-Austin (1-2, 1-1) held an 84-83 lead with 1:05 remaining in the game before Kareem scored a lay-up off a feed from Jacob Sibley. Ozarks then out scored the Tornados 7-2 in the ensuing forty-eight seconds to secure their second straight league victory. Concordia's Luis Urquieta nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it was a little too late.
The Eagles (2-1, 2-0) benefited from a strong night at the free throw line, hitting 19-of-23 (82%) in the game. They nailed 12-of-13 (92%) in the second half alone. Ozarks dominated the boards, collecting 59 while limiting the Tornados to 40.
The high-scoring affair saw 17 lead changes and numerous fast-break opportunities as a result of the fast-paced game. 11 different Ozarks' players scored in the contest, with Kareem's 30 leading the way. Josh Joyner added 17 and Sibley contributed 16. Kareem also had a team-high 11 rebounds. Scott McCall had a team-best 8 assists.
