Carroll remains perfect on the season at 2-0 while the Warhawks, the nation’s 13th ranked team entering the season, falls to 2-2.
“This is about as big a non-conference win as you can get,” said Carroll head coach David Schultz. “”This is a big win for our guys and our program.”
The Pioneers jumped out to a 31-26 lead at halftime while holding UW-Whitewater to 34.4% shooting in the opening 20-minutes. In the 2nd half Carroll held advantages from three-point land and the free-throw line. The Pioneers hit 4-of-7 three point attempts in the 2nd half while the Warhawks were 0-of-5. Carroll scored 20 second points from the charity strip compared to 13 for UW-W.
“I think our team defense was a major factor in the game, especially in the first half when we really set the tone,” said Schultz. “I also thought we did a great job defensively on Jeremy Manchester. He’s a great player but we never let him get into his game.”
Carroll held a lead for the majority of the game but the Warhawks clawed back to take a 50-47 lead until Drury hit a three-pointer at 7:48 of the 2nd half to knot the score. Following several ties, freshman Trevor Startyton gave Carroll the lead for good when his three-pointer put them up 57-54.
“I was proud of how we responded after they made their run in the second half,” said Schultz. “Our guys showed great mental toughness to battle back and get the lead for good and dictate the remainder of the game.”
Carroll takes its 2-0 start on the road when they open Midwest Conference play on Dec. 2 at Knox College followed by a visit to Lake Forest College on Dec. 3. The Pioneers next home game will be Dec. 8 when they host the Falcons of Concordia (WI) University.
