A layup by Kule Roggenburk pulled JCU within 17-14 with 7:50 left in the first half. Kaplan fed Onyiriuka for a dunk and Ndubizu for a layup as part of an extended 12-2 run over six minutes that put Rochester ahead, 29-16, with 1:50 left. It was 33-22 at halftime.

Smith scored five of his seven points in a 98-second span of the second half that pulled John Carroll within 12, 44-32, with 14:59 left in the game. Mike Goia scored on a pair of breakaway layups and added one free throw to stretch the lead back to 17, 49-32, in the next 29 seconds.

Onyiriuka hit 9 of 12 from the floor and Ndubizu made six of nine floor shots. Rochester shot 59.6% for the game (34 of 57), 64% in the second half (21 of 33). JCU made only six of 23 in the first 20 minutes (26.1%) and 31.7% for the game (19 of 60).
