Connecticut College 77, Vassar 62

NEW LONDON, CT — Jeff Young (E. Hartford, Conn.) poured in a game-high 18 points with 11 rebounds, propelling the Connecticut College Camels (2-1) to a 77-62 victory over Vassar College (3-1) at Luce Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.

Senior guard Will Byrne (Chelmsford, Mass.) dumped in 15 points to lead the visiting Brewers. Junior William Kieffer (Chappaqua, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for Vassar. Freshman Brian Butterworth (Hamilton, Mass.) contributed 10 points for the Brewers.

Vassar next plays on the road in the finals of the Mid-Hudson Shootout against SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.

In the first half, the Camels used a balanced scoring attack to open up a 36-24 halftime lead. Christian Mosley was 3-for-4 from long distance, leading the Camels with 12 points. Charles Stone added eight points in the low-post on 4-for-6 shooting.

In the second stanza, the Brewers pressed the Camels and used a 9-0 run to close the hosts lead to seven, 48-41 with 11:34 remaining. But the Camels got a needed boost from junior Sokol Zejnullahu (Cambridge, Mass.) who entered the game after Stone picked up his fourth foul with 12:29 remaining. Zejnullahu was a disruptive force on the box, finishing with four points, four blocks and four rebounds.

Later on in the half with 5:51 to go, a rebound and put back by Young made it a 60-46 game. With 4:34 remaining, Joe Davis (East Amherst, N.Y.) put in a lay in for the visitors that cut the lead to nine, 61-52.

But the Camels were able to handle the pressure from Vassar. Jahkeen Washington (New York, N.Y.) iced the victory by breaking a double-team with a nifty entry pass to Gabe Patton (Lynnfield, Mass.) and the Camels were on their way with a 65-52 lead. Washington dished out a game-high seven assists for Connecticut College. The Camels took care of business at the foul line, connecting on 22-of-27 (82%) attempts from the charity stripe to secure the 77-62 victory.
