(Nov. 26, 2005) - Junior forward Luis Martinez (Passaic, NJ/Clifton) contributed 26 points and nine rebounds while junior forward Samir Sanu (Edison, NJ/Sayreville) dropped in a career-high 18 points as William Paterson stormed past Manhattanville, 89-69, in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday at the William Paterson Rec Center.
Sanu scored all of his points during a game-breaking 30-10 run as the Pioneers (2-2) turned a 50-43 lead into an insurmountable 80-53 cushion with 4:42 remaining after the junior drained a 3-pointer. Sanu's production came in just eight minutes of action.
Sophomore guard Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) added 13 in the victory for William Paterson, which produced its highest offensive output since a 103-45 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Feb. 19, 2005. In the victory, the Pioneers shot 53.7 percent (36-for-67), including a 60.5 percent effort in the second half, while owning a 41-25 edge on the glass and forcing 22 turnovers.
Sophomore guard Brian Fink (Queens, NY) scored a team-high 23 points and went 5-for-9 from downtown as Manhattanville (3-1) suffered its first defeat. Junior guard Cody Moffett (Brooklyn, NY) added 14 off the bench and junior guard John DiBetta (Valhalla, NY) added 12 and five assists.
William Paterson took a 35-28 lead into halftime after going on a 14-4 run over the final 5:38. Six different players scored during the spurt, including four by sophomore guard Tyreck Rolon (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth). Martinez led all first-half scorers with 12 points for the Pioneers, while Moffett produced nine and Fink added eight to pace the Valiants.
William Paterson returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 30, when it hosts backyard and New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State at 8 p.m. Manhattanville resumes play the same day when it opens its Skyline Conference schedule at Yeshiva with an 8 p.m. tip-off.
