Rochester 79, Eastern Connecticut 54

ROCHESTER, NY — The University of Rochester held visiting Eastern Connecticut State to 29 percent shooting in the first half and went on to a 79-54 victory in the first round of the UR/Holiday Inn Airport Invitational Tournament at the Louis Alexander Palestra here tonight.

The Yellowjackets (3-1) will play 16th-ranked John Carroll University in Sunday’s championship game at 3 pm. John Carroll defeated Washington & Lee, 86-56, in the first game. ECSU will play for third place against W&L at 1 pm.

Joe Canty and Mike Goia scored 10 points apiece in a balanced Rochester effort. All 14 players made it into the scoring column. Jeff Juron had nine points, four assists, and three steals in 19 minutes.

ECSU was led by Eric Johnson, Johnathan Simmons, and Matt Albon with nine points apiece. The Warriors are 2-2.

Rochester built an early 11-point lead, but the Warriors went on a 7-1 run over three minutes to pull within 18-13. Albom hit a three-point goal, Kevin Zalucki made a layup, and Leon Martin added two free throws.

The Yellowjackets hit three consecutive jumpers – by Juron, Canty, and Dan Milbrand, to restorte the lead to 24-13. It was 37-19 at the half.
