Mississippi College 91, Sul Ross State 68

CLINTON, MS — Mississippi College faced their first big test of the season Saturday night against Sul Ross State and the Lobos provided plenty of resistance in the first half trailing the Choctaws just 42-38 at the break.

But the Choctaws dominated the second half and buried the Lobos 91-68 in a clash of two of the American Southwest Conference's top teams. Sul Ross has won the ASC West Division the last two seasons and is a favorite this year.

MC led by as many as twelve in the first half but a Sul Ross 17-9 run to end the first half erased the large deficit.

Sul Ross tied the score 50-50 with 16:30 remaining only to watch an MC 24-6 run end any hopes of a Lobo upset. MC forward Lonnie Vasquez had the hot hand in the second half scoring 12 of his team high 14 points.

Junior forward Timothy Broomfield provided a little of everything for MC scoring nine points, grabbing a game high eight rebounds, dishing a game high seven assists and blocking four shots. Sophomore forward Tyler Winford and junior guard Devin Jones each scored 14 points also.

Sul Ross was led by freshman forward C. J. Acosta who scored a game high 23 points and pulled down a team high six rebounds. ASC West Division Preseason Player of the Year Sidney Hooper struggled with just nine points on 4-14 shooting.

MC shot 63 percent from the field including a sizzling 76 percent on 19-25 shooting in the second half. Sul Ross shot 40 percent from the field and was 18-23 from the free throw line.

The Choctaws outrebounded the Lobos 36-25.

MC is home again Monday night at 7:30 pm against Howard Payne, another preseason favorite in the ASC West Division.
