Manchester 67, Maryville (Mo.) 62

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The Maryville University men's basketball team fell five points shy of a victory in the first round of the Mike Rokicki Community vs. Cancer Challenge hosted by DePauw University. The Saints dropped a 62-67 decision to Manchester College to fall to 1-3 on the season. Manchester improves to 2-2 with the victory.
Maryville played a solid first half and trailed by only one point heading into halftime. Manchester, who shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from behind the arc in the first half, came out strong in the second half and quickly increased their lead to nine points just five minutes into the half.
The Saints would never allow the Spartans to lead by more than nine, as they chipped away at the margin and got within one point with 1:57 remaining on the clock. Manchester would score four unanswered points to bring their lead back up to five points, but Maryville finally answered and was within three points after a made layup by senior Stephen Bash with nine seconds left on the clock.
A quick foul by senior Matt Regan would send the Spartans to the charity stripe, where Kevin Kuhn sank both freebies to give his squad a five point advantage. The Saints would get off one final shot with one second remaining on the clock, but the attempt failed as the buzzer signaled the end of the game.
Sophomore Mike Turpen led the Saints in scoring for the second consecutive game. He finished with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting from behind the arc and 2-of-4 (.500) from the free throw line. Senior Ryan Klein added 11 points and four rebounds, while Bash chipped in with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Manchester had three players score in double figures, as Kuhn, Eric Berger and Derek Hammond recorded 16, 15 and 10 points respectively. Berger also had a nine rebounds, while David Mattingly added nine points and eight rebounds for the game.
Maryville will return to the court tomorrow in the consolation game, when they will face D'Youville College at 2:00 pm eastern standard time.
