LaGRANGE, GA – Demetris Render hit a free throw with seven seconds remaining to lift the LaGrange College men’s basketball team to an 80-79 win Saturday over Lynchburg College in the Coaches against Cancer Classic.
With the score tied at 79, the Hornets missed a shot in the final 10 seconds and LC was whistled for a foul on the rebound. Render hit the first shot and missed the second, but the Hornets could not get off a good shot as time expired.
Junior guard Pete Manos (Miami, FL/Avon Old Farms) scored a career-high 33 points and snared 11 rebounds, while shooting 12 of 21 from the field. Matt Sweeney (Hollywood, MD/Leonardtown) scored 19 points and hit three three-pointers, and Pat Prior (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) had 14 points and five rebounds. Senior Andy Albright (Hudson, OH/Hudson) had five steals to break the school record for thefts in a career. The 6-2 guard passed Chris Whelan ’00 (215) on the all-time chart and currently has 219 steals in his four seasons.
Leon Williams scored 21 points and grabbed six caroms for LaGrange (2-2). Robby Lawrence had 15 points and six boards.
Lynchburg (0-5) will host Randolph-Macon College Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Hornets’ first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game of the season. Four of Lynchburg’s losses have been by a combined 16 points.
