Averkamp, the 2005 LMC Rookie of the Year, was nearly unstoppable in the Eagles’ (3-1, 1-0 LMC) first conference game of the season. The 6-foot-6 forward grabbed 12 boards in the first half with 17 of his total rebounds coming on the defensive end. He shot 6-of-11 from the field with 14 of his points coming in the final 20 minutes.
Seth Cooper struggled with a 3-of-13 shooting effort, but still managed 11 points to go along with six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Ryan Johnsen also added 11 points, including a pair of three-point baskets.
Marian’s Titus Redmond scored 10 points and had a team-best 15 rebounds. Jordan Van Ess led the Sabres (1-3, 0-1 LMC) in scoring with 16 points, while Jake Harmsen tallied 11 points prior to fouling out of the contest with 32 seconds remaining.
The Eagles’ four first-half steals all led to breakaway baskets, which nearly proved to be the difference at halftime with Edgewood College leading 37-30. Redmond’s jumper at the 11:31 mark of the second half got the Sabres within two points at 51-49, but the Eagles would never relinquish the lead.
Edgewood College will be back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. against the University of Chicago. The Maroon will enter Sunday’s non-conference match up in Madison with an overall record of 3-1 following today’s 70-67 loss to Carleton.
