Carthage 78, Concordia-Irvine 64

MAUI, Hawaii — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (1-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out its three-game trip to the Maui Classic in Hawaii on Saturday, Nov. 25 with a 78-64 win over Concordia University (Calif., 3-2) at Maui High School. Carthage got off to a rough start, turning the ball over on its first six possessions and falling behind, 8-0. The Eagles opened up a 10-point lead, 32-22, at 3:50 first half, before the Red Men used an 11-2 run to close to within a point, 34-33. Concordia led by three points at the break, 36-33. Carthage opened the second period with a 16-2 run to go up by nine, 49-38. The Redmen went up by 16 points, 58-42, at 11:20, capping a 25-6 run to open the second half. Carthage made it a 21-point game, 70-49, at 5:25, and the Redmen went on to win by 14 points, 78-64. Trey Bowens led the way with 16 points. Navarro Thompson scored a career-high 14 points, with Mike Hart and Keena Johnson adding 10 points each. Carthage opened its season on Wednesday, Nov. 23 with a 78-75 loss to Concordia (Calif., 2-1), and the Red Men lost to Westmont College (3-1), 72-69 in overtime, in Friday, Nov. 25. Carthage travels to Holland, Mich., on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 2-3 to play in the CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at Hope College’s newly-opened DeVos Fieldhouse. The Red Men will take on Calvin College on Friday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m., EST, with Hope playing CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) at 8 p.m., EST. On Saturday, Dec. 3, Carthage plays Hope at 3 p.m., EST, with Calvin facing Wheaton (Ill.) at 1 p.m., EST.
