The Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team used high flying intensity in their opener of the Radisson/Carnegie Mellon Tournament against Oberlin College in a 106-70 victory. Four dunks by the home team excited the crowd and kept people in their seats for the duration of the game.
Carnegie Mellon extends their record to 3-0 on the season and will play Bethany (W.Va.) College in the championship game of the tournament at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Oberlin drops to 0-4 and will play Keystone College (1-3) at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
The Tartans jumped out to an early eight-point lead (17-9) with just four minutes run off the clock on senior guard A.J. Straub’s second three-pointer. The Yeomen would never get closer, as Straub continued his hot streak, totaling 15 points on 5-5 shooting from behind the arc.
With senior forward Clayton Barlow-Wilcox (Brookline, Mass.) on the bench with foul trouble, senior forward Bary Dunn picked up the slack. Both Dunn and Straub led the first half scoring with 12 points, as senior forward Nate Maurer had 10 points going into the half. Senior forward Marques Johnson dished out four assists in the half, while grabbing six boards.
The second half went much like the first, as the Tartans extended their 21-point halftime lead to 29 with two jumpers by Barlow-Wilcox, a dunk by Maurer and a jumper by sophomore guard Geoff Kozak with just three minutes off the clock.
Dunn and Straub kept their presence known, as Dunn followed a trey by Straub with a dunk off an assist by Straub at the 11:06 mark. The pair hooked up on the Tartans next possession, as Straub again fed Dunn for a lay-up after Dunn blocked a Yeomen shot.
Junior forward Greg Gonzalez capped off the dunk show with his second of the night off an alley-oop assist by Johnson, giving the Tartans a 37-point lead with eight minutes left to play.
Freshman forward Ryan Einwag came off the bench to score six straight points for the Tartans and total nine for the game.
Dunn was the team leader in points with 18, as Maurer finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the home squad.
Matt Godwin led the Yeomen offense with 24 points, thanks in part to 6-10 shooting from three-point land. Brad Spelich and Mike Loll also scored in double figures for the visitors with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
