Christopher Newport 103, St. Joseph (Vt.) 63

NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team rolled past College of St. Joseph's (VT) 103-63 in the semifinals of the 20th annual CNU Invitational Friday evening.

The Captains jumped out to an early 19-3 lead and never looked back. CNU was up 54-31 at the break on 24-of-40 (60%) shooting from the field, 4-of-9 (44%) from behind the arc and just 2-of-5 from the free throw line.

The Saints were just 12-of-34 (35%) from the floor, 4-of-12 (33%) on three's and 3-of-4 (75%) from the charity stripe.

The second half was controlled once again by the Captains, as they out scored St. Joseph's 49-32.

CNU was 21-of-32 (66%) from the floor in the second half including 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 4-of-6 (67%) from the line. The Captains held the Saints to 11-of-31 (36%) shooting in the second half, including 4-of-11 (36%) on three's and were 6-of-8 (75%) from the line.

For the game, St. Joe's was 23-of-65 (35%) from the field, 8-of-23 (35%) on three's and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line. The Captains were 45-of-72 (63%) from the floor, 7-of-13 (54%) from behind the arc and 6-of-11 (55%) from the charity stripe.

St. Joe's was led by Jared Henry's 13 points and Rich Ortega's 12 points and nine rebounds.

CNU was led by freshman Davon Barton with 17 points and 11 assists in 20 minutes of work. Dont'a Selden led all scorers with 18 points and Billy McShepard added 12 points off the bench. Korey Lewis and Edward Riley added eight points each.

Christopher Newport is now 2-1 on the year while St. Joe's falls to 2-4. The Saints meet Maryland Bible in the third place game of the CNU Invitational at 5 pm Saturday while the Captains will take on Southern Virginia at 7:30 pm in the championship game. So. Virginia defeated Maryland Bible 78-75 in today's first semifinal.
