MAUI, Hawaii — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (0-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Westmont College (3-1), 72-69 in overtime, in Friday, Nov. 25 at the Maui Classic at Maui High School in Hawaii. Carthage trailed by as much as 11 points in the first half, 31-20, at 3:54 before using a 10-0 run to close the gap to one point, 31-30. Westmont led by three at the break, 33-30. In the second half, the Warriors jumped out to a 10-point lead, 42-32, at 16:50 and extended that to a 12-point margin, 49-37, at 12:45. The Red Men used a 16-4 run to tie the game, 53-53, at 4:25. Carthage took its first lead of the game, 58-57, at 2:10 on Kyle Jeffery’s fifth three-pointer of the game. Trey Bowens followed with another three-pointer, and the Red Men led by four, 61-57, with 1:25 to play. Westmont cut the lead to 61-59. On Carthage’s next possession, Scott Hood turned the ball over, and Westmont’s Josh Ware scored to send the game into overtime tied at 61-61. Carthage took its last lead of the game, 64-63, at 3:30 in overtime on a free throw by Jeffery. The Warriors took the lead for good, 65-64, at 2:55. With a four-point Westmont lead, 70-66, Jeffery nailed his sixth three-pointer of the game to pull the Red Men within one point, 70-69, with five seconds remaining. Ware drilled a pair of free throws with four seconds to play to make it a 72-69 game. Carthage’s Trey Bowens had the ball but was unable to get a shot off as the final horn sounded. Jeffery scored a career-high 28 points for Carthage, while Bowens added 16 points. The Redmen struggled at the free-throw line, connecting on just 11-of-24 from the charity stripe.
Carthage opened its 2006 season on Wednesday, Nov. 23 with a 78-75 loss to Concordia University (Calif., 2-1) in the Maui Classic at Maui High School in Hawaii. Carthage had the ball on the baseline with one second to play in the game but could not get a shot off. Trey Bowens led the Redmen with 15 points. Mark Morrison had 14 points, and Mike Hart, who fouled out of the game, added 12 points. Carthage will conclude thee Hawaii trip on Saturday, Nov. 26 with a second game against Concordia (Calif., 3-1) at 11 a.m., HST/3 p.m., CST. The Eagles were an 86-71 winner over Wisconsin-River Falls on Nov. 25.
