Cornerstone 87, Calvin 79

GRAND RAPIDS, Mi — Calvin suffered its first-ever defeat in the first round of the Select Bank Hall of Fame Classic, falling to East Beltline rival Cornerstone University 87-79 Friday night at the VanAndel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids.

Calvin (2-2) will face Aquinas (3-3) in Saturday’s consolation game at noon. Aquinas was nipped by Hope 67-66 in Friday’s second first round game.

In its loss to Cornerstone, Calvin led for much of the first half but fell behind at 25-24 with 6:13 remaining in the half and then trailed 39-35 at halftime.

Calvin came back to take a brief 53-51 lead on a jumper by junior Kyle Snoeyink with just under 13 minutes left and later took a 58-55 lead on a basket inside by sophomore Joe Pearcy (Vicksburg HS) with 9:58 left on the clock. The Golden Eagles then went on a 14-4 run to take a 69-62 lead with under five minutes to play. Calvin got no closer than six points the rest of the way as Cornerstone connected on eight of 10 free throw attempts in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Calvin was led in defeat by freshman Caleb Veldhouse who popped in a career-high 17 points while Snoeyink and freshman Dustin Smith also had career-high scoring efforts with 12 points apiece. Junior Josh Meckes also had 10 points before departing late in the first half with an injury.

Cornerstone placed four players in double-digits in scoring led by junior guard Mike Cameron who poured in 28 points while senior guard Josh Liggins had 16 points, junior center John Jonker 14 points and 11 rebounds and senior point guard Jim Cochran 14 points.

Calvin shot just 31.7 percent from the floor including just 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from three-point range. Cornerstone connected on 43.5 percent of its field goal attempts including 81.8 percent (27-of-33) from the free throw line.
