York (Pa.) 89, Gettysburg 80

YORK, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team opened their final campaign at Wolf Gym with a solid 89-80 victory over Gettysburg College on Tuesday night in York. The Spartans, who are ranked sixth in the nation, improve to 3-0 for the campaign. The win for the Spartans extends their home court winning streak to 18 dating back to last season. Gettysburg falls to 2-1 for the season. The win for York is the first home win in the series since the Spartans’ 65-57 victory in 1999.
The Bullets started off strong as they jumped out to a 9-4 lead less than three minutes into the game. The Spartans responded with a 13-5 spurt that gave the home team a 17-14 lead with 12:04 left in the half. Gettysburg fashioned a 13-4 run to retake the lead at 27-21. York battled back to tie the game at 34 with 1:02 left in the half. The Spartans got the final five points of the half including an off-balance shot off a near turnover by Nate Fry just three seconds before the horn sounded as York took a 39-34 lead to the intermission.
The Spartans shot 48.1% from the floor in the first half while the Bullets were also very good from the field as they converted 51.7% of their shots from the field. The Spartans held a big advantage from the free throw line where they were 9-for-10 while Gettysburg did not attempt a free throw.
The green and white opened the second half with a quick 6-2 spurt to push their lead to nine at 45-36. The Bullets trimmed the Spartan advantage to two on a deep three from Mike Spadafora with 14:06 left in the game. The Spartans then fashioned a 14-2 run that included two three-pointers from both Fry and Kenny Fass as York pushed the lead to 65-51 with 8:44 remaining in the game.
The York lead ballooned to 18 on a pair of Brad Zerfing free throws with 2:32 left. The Bullets hit back-to-back threes in less than 20 seconds to cut the lead to 12 with just over two minutes left. The Spartans did not do a great job of putting the Bullets away as Gettysburg outscored the Spartans 16-7 over the last 2:25 of the game, giving the game the appearance of being closer than it was at the end.
The Spartans were led by Fass as the senior again came up big for the green and white with 21 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Fass was 8-for-9 from the floor including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He also converted his two free throw attempts. Fry and Chad McGowan each added 19 points for YCP. Fry’s 19 points establish a new career high in just his third collegiate game. He also had two rebounds and three steals. Fry was 7-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-6 from downtown. McGowan, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, had five rebounds, two assists and a steal in addition to his 19 points. McGowan went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe for the green and white. Zerfing was the four Spartan in double figures with 10 points, four assists, and no turnovers in 26 minutes of action.
Erik Fromm led all scorers with 23 points for the Bullets. Fromm also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds as he was a blistering 10-for-13 from the floor including 3-for-5 from three. Matt Whelan and Todd Brady each added 12 points for the Bullets. Whelan also had three assists and two steals while Brady handed out a game-high six assists in addition to grabbing six rebounds.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 58.5% from the floor including an impressive 60.0% (9-for-15) from three. York held a decided edge in free throws as they were 18-for-20 from the stripe while Gettysburg was just 2-for-3 for the night. Gettysburg also shot well from the floor as they converted 56.7% from the field and 50% (10-for-20) from three.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, November 30 when they host Goucher College in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Tip time at Wolf Gym is set for 8:00 pm.
