York (N.Y.) 91, Mount Saint Vincent 82

JAMAICA, NY — Mount Saint Vincent senior James Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) enjoyed the finest performance of his storied career, and fellow senior Charles Hernandez (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scanlan) added a double-double, but the effort fell short as the Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Basketball team dropped a 91-82 thriller to York College on Tuesday night at York. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 1-1 for the 2005 season while York improves to 1-2.

Mooney was on fire all night as he scored a career-high 42 points on 15 for 29 shooting, including 9 for 18 from three-point range. The guard added six assists, four rebounds, and three steals to an incredible effort that leaves him 535 points away from becoming the all-time leading scorer in Mount Saint Vincent history. The 42-point outburst was also the second best individual game performance in Mount Saint Vincent history, falling one point short of the school record of 43 points in a game. Mooney’s previous career high was 40 on Feb. 2, 2005 during a 115-107 loss to eventual Skyline Conference Champion, Mount Saint Mary.

Hernandez, Mooney’s back-court mate, also had a fine evening as he added 12 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Mount Saint Vincent was also led by sophomore Corey Petrucelli (Stratford, CT/St. Joseph’s) who added 12 points.

Overall, the game was fairly even statistically, however the Mount was plagued by turnovers the entire game as the Dolphins turned the ball over 21 times, while York only turned the ball over 13 times.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, Nov. 28 when they host Baruch College at 7:00 p.m.
