Worcester State 80, Mass-Dartmouth 62

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team was behind by as many as 12 points in the first half before tying the score with seconds remaining in the first stanza and going on to defeat the visiting Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth by the final score of, 80-62, in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College Tuesday evening. The victory gives the Lancers a 2-1 record on the young season, while the Corsairs dip to 1-2.

UMass-Dartmouth came out firing on all cylinders hitting on 7 of 16 three point shots in the first half. Overall, the Corsairs shot 47% from the floor in the first half. Despite the hot shooting from the outside, forward Charlie Large (Easton, MA) paced the Corsairs in the first half with 10 points coming mostly in the paint. Devon Maiorano (Rehoboth, MA) also had 10 points going 3 for 5 from behind the arc. Worcester State trailed by 12 with 4:32 remaining in the half before rattling of 10 unanswered points to get within 2 points and then tying the contest on a Ralph Frazier (Carver, MA) free throw with 4 seconds to play at, 42-42. Guard Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) was immense for the Lancers in the half keeping them in contentions scoring 20 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the field.

In the second half, the game was tied at 49-49 with 16:59 to go when the Lancers went on an, 11-0, run to separate themselves from the Corsairs. Hopkins once again led the way in the second half with 12 points. Senior Tyson Drayton (Roxbury, MA) and sophomore Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) each had 8 second half points. The Corsairs were cold in the second frame shooting just 23% from the field.

The Lancers finished with 4 players in double digit scoring with Hopkins finishing with a game high 32 points. Drayton scored 17 points and Retallic and Spont each added 10. Spont also had a game-high 12 rebounds. UMass-Dartmouth was led by Large with 14 points. Paul Pawloski (Taunton, MA) added 11 and Mairoano finished with 10.

Worcester State will return to action on Tuesday when they host Clark University. UMass-Dartmouth will host Bridgewater State College on Tuesday.
