Wilkes 82, Baptist Bible 68

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Despite the cold weather outside on Tuesday night, the Wilkes University men’s basketball team was red-hot during the first half of their non-conference game with visiting Baptist Bible in the Marts Center. The Colonels shot 60 percent from the field in the opening half to race out to a 16-point lead and never looked back in claiming an 82-68 victory in their home opener.

Wilkes improves to 2-1 overall with the win, while the Defenders see their record fall to 2-1. The Colonels will be idle until Wednesday, November 30, when they open up Freedom Conference play by hosting local rival and defending conference champion King’s College at 8:00 p.m.

Baptist Bible hung tough throughout most of the first half and held a 13-12 lead with 13:15 left following a Derek Jacobs’ field goal.

A three-point field goal by Chris Shovlin, however, would ignite a 14-0 Wilkes run that provided the home squad with a 26-13 lead at the 10:06 mark. Dan Adams and Steve Kline converted field goals following the three by Shovlin to give the Colonels a 19-13 advantage. Jeremy Kable would knock down a long-range three before Kline would score four more points to up the lead to 13 points.

Korey Collins would hit three out of four free throws and Jon Konzelman would convert inside to pull the Defenders within 28-20 with 8:51 showing on the clock. However, a pair of free throws by Michael Constantine and a three-pointer by Kable upped the Wilkes lead to double-digits for good, 33-20. The Colonels, who hit 66.7 percent (6-of-9) of their three-point tries in the opening period, took a 51-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Wilkes would methodically pull further away from the Defenders in the second half, and took their biggest lead of 31 points, 74-43, on a basket inside by Greg Cardamone with 10:39 left in the contest.

Baptist Bible, behind four three-pointers by Josh Cannon, would close the game with a 14-3 run to cut the final deficit to 14 points.

The Colonels finished the game shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from three-point range. They also maintained a 45-31 rebounding advantage over the Defenders, while holding them to just 35 percent shooting from the floor.

Wilkes placed ten players in the scoring column, led by Shovlin’s 15 points. The sophomore also had eight rebounds and three assists. Kable, who hit 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc, cashed in 14 tallies. Kline ended the night with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Baptist Bible was led by a game-high 17 points from Konzelman. David Stallard and Cannon both chipped in with 12 tallies.
