Cocozziello scored 17 of his 27 in the opening half as the Hawks sprinted to a 49-34 lead at the intermission.
Leading 32-28 with 5:11 left in the first half, Hartwick edged away from the Trailblazers with a 17-4 run over the next three and a half minutes, spurred by Hartwick’s pressure defense.
The Hawks forced four turnovers in that span, and got seven points from Cocozziello and five from junior Alex Lanfear (Lake George/Lake George, N.Y.).
Hartwick also got strong contributions from junior forward Pat Dunnigan (Vernon Twp./Sussex, N.J) who added 13 points, and freshman forward Anthony Brown (North Division/Milwaukee, Wisc.), who scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Brown did all of his damage in the second half after being saddled with two early fouls.
Mass College was led by 22 points and seven rebounds from Thad Broughton (St. Mary’s Peabody, Mass.) . Adam Garner (Drury/North Adams, Mass.) added 19 points and JP Quintal (Queensbury/Queensbury, N.Y.) 14.
Hartwick improves to 2-1 with the win. The Trailblazers fall to 1-2 on the season.
