Cortland State 84, Elmira 52

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Senior Frank Ranieri (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded team highs of 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists as Cortland defeated Elmira, 84-52, in the Red Dragons' home opener. Cortland improves to 2-1 with the non-league win. Elmira is 0-1.

Ranieri led five Cortland double-figure scorers. Junior Dave Maggiacomo (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) made 4-of-8 three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Senior Simon Skrelja (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists, junior Rod Headley (Peekskill) scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists and junior Dave Jutton (Red Hook) made a trio of three-pointers in an 11-point effort.

Elmira was led by senior Micah Owens (Elmira/Southside), who made 6-of-9 field goals for 15 points in addition to pulling down five rebounds. Sophomore Serge Clement (Jamaica/St. John's Prep) scored 13 points and senior James Brown (Montour Falls/Odessa-Montour) recorded nine rebounds.

Cortland never trailed and turned a six-point lead with 5:15 left in the first half into a 37-27 halftime advantage. The Soaring Eagles were within 39-32 on a Clement layup with 17:59 left, but the Red Dragons went on a 18-4 run, including two Maggiacomo treys, to takea 57-36 lead with 11:35 remaining.
