Maryville (Tenn.) 62, Centre 59

DANVILLE, Ky. — Colonels edged by Maryville 62-59

A last second three-point attempt rimmed out and the Centre College men's basketball team dropped its first game of the season 62-59 to Maryville College, Tuesday, Nov. 22, in Danville, Ky.

The first half went back and forth with four ties and 10 lead changes. Trailing 21-17 in the first half with 7:05 remaining, Centre used an 11-0 run on a pair of three pointers and a three-point by senior Reggie Magnusson to take a 28-21 lead at the 2:49 mark. Magnusson finished the first half with 11 points and four rebounds and Centre led 30-27 at the half.

Centre committed 14 turnovers in the first period, while shooting 43.5% (10-23) from the floor. Maryville, which entered the game averaging 91.0 points per game, shot only 33.3% (11-33) for the half.

The lead changed hands three times in the first six minutes of the second half. A Maryville three-pointer with 14:28 gave the Fighting Scots the lead for good. Centre stayed within six points until another Maryville three pointer with 2:44 gave them a seven-point edge.

Junior forward Matt Jacobson answered with a three pointer and Magnusson followed with a steal which led to a three-point play on a made lay up and Maryville foul. Two Maryville free throws pushed the lead back to three points with 1:25 remaining.

Centre missed its final five shots of the game, including a potential game-tying three pointer with time expiring to end the game. The Colonels shot only 31.0% (9-29) in the second half to finish at 36.5% (19-52) for the game. Maryville shot 39.7% (25-63) and committed two less turnovers (20-18) than Centre.

Magnusson added 12 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Nestheide tallied 12 points and three steals and senior forward Coy Zerhusen added seven points and eight rebounds.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 1-1 on the year, while Maryville improves to 3-0 overall. Centre will next play in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, hosted by LaGrange College, Friday, Nov. 25, in LaGrange, Ga. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
