Ferris State 78, Calvin 64

GRAND RAPIDS, Mi — Hosting the third game of the season, Calvin (2-1) faced up against non-conference opponent Ferris State (1-2).

Calvin started off the first half on a good note, tying up the game at 6 and then going on an 11-4 run, which included two three-point shots from senior Andy Draayer. Ferris State threatened but could not gain the lead until tying up the game at 25-25 with a layup by Dennis Springs. Ferris State then took the lead 27-25 when Julius Vines nailed a jumper. Though Draayer tied the game near the 5:00 mark with a made layup, and junior Kyle Snoeyink gave the Knights a 29-27 lead, which was extended to 31-27 by two made free throws from the hands of freshman Caleb Veldhouse. Ferris State’s Vines sparked a 20-2 run to close out the half. Ferris State led by 14 points, 47-33 at half time.

During the second half, The Bulldogs kept the Knights at a distance. Junior Josh Meckes brought the Knights within nine points with a layup, but Ferris State did not led Calvin get any closer for the remainder of the game. Ferris led by as many as 20 points with just under five minutes left to play, leading 72-52. Though freshman Dustin Smith made three free-throws and a lay-up in the last 1:45 minutes, Calvin couldn’t stop the Ferris offense, which scored four points within that same time frame. The Knights gained no ground in the second half: they were still down by 14 points when the buzzer rang, signaling a 78-64 victory for the Bulldogs.

The Ferris State victory was its first-ever win over Calvin at the Calvin Fieldhouse which opened in time for the 1965-66 season. Prior to Tuesday’s game, Calvin had won the 10 previous meetings with Ferris State at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Leading Calvin in scoring were Draayer with 17 points, senior Kyle Trewhella with 14 points, and Veldhouse, Meckes, and Smith who each added 7 points. Junior Eric DeVries contributed 7 boards along with four points, while Meckes had 6 boards.

With 15 points apiece for Ferris State were Springs, Terrance Shaw and Jessie York. Antwuan Hold contributed 11 points, while Michael Daniels had 10 boards and Jeffery Shanahan had 14.

Calvin returns to the court this Friday and Saturday as the Knights will face Cornerstone Friday night at 6:00 pm in the first game of the Select Bank Classic at the Van Andel Arena with Aquinas set to face Hope in Friday’s second game. Friday’s winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. while the losers will meet in the consolation game at noon.
